We left there mid-morning Saturday after a long, tiring week. We had gotten all packed up by early Friday afternoon then went out for one last dinner with some of the team. We had a great time saying goodbye. I'll miss them greatly, but I know I'll see many of them soon. A couple of them live here in the mid-west and will be coming home at the end of the summer. Some don't live here, but are considering moving here. That would be awesome.

We had a great drive home. We left Saturday morning after a Prince Family Pancake Breakfast, a Saturday morning tradition. We drove through to Pekin and stayed with Amy's brother there. We went to church Sunday morning and her parents came down that afternoon. We got back on the road and were back home here by 10:30 pm. Very stress free. We got the trailer unloaded back into our garage yesterday and are starting to get re-settled here.

We're excited about being back home. We're still looking for jobs, but there are some good opportunities. Continue to pray for our adjustments back home and that we can get some good rest before re-entering the workforce.

We hope to continue to update this blog as long as people will read it. We feel like we are still a part of the team in New Orleans, continuing to pray and support them even as we are not physically there in LA. Also, we are praying about our involvement in the flood effected areas here in the area. Pray with us about this as well as there will probably be some great opportunities for Kingdom work to be done in our own back yard.

Thank you all for your support, again. The last 8 months have been amazing, and I'm glad you all had a chance to share in this with us. Talk to you soon.

Getting ready for another week.

We got back just fine last week. We were greeted by some serious heat and some good friends who came to get us from the airport with our dog. I was right back to work Wednesday, but since there were no teams here, Amy had some time to catch up at home. I was helping with some framing on a house that needed to be done last week so we could get the electrical run. I'm happy to say we got most of it completed. The electrician should be able to get it done this week. It was really hot in that house, like a sauna at times. I hadn't been used to working, and when you add the 95 degree weather with some wicked humidity, it's tiring. It seemed like I couldn't drink enough water. I just kept sweating, which I guess is a good thing, eh?

This week, I'll be back to supervising. I've got a couple of job sites going. Rock of Ages will be getting some tile work done. The laminate flooring is all done, as well as the painting, and some of the trim work. We're really getting close now. At the other job site, we'll be finishing the drywall. A couple of weeks ago, the construction team worked together to get it started and polish the technique that we'll teach volunteers when they come. So now I'll get to practice that as we finish the rest of the house. Then it will be time to paint there.

Amy's back in the kitchen this week. She'll hopefully be doing breakfast most of the mornings from here on out. This will give her a bunch of time during the day to pack as we prepare to move home. As many of you may know, the passing of my step-father back home has been really tough on my mom and caused us to think about our stay here in LA. We've decided to move back home and be with her. We will move on June 21st.

This decision is bitter-sweet. We have mostly loved being here. There have been some set backs here and there and some complications, but, for the most part, we've really enjoyed our time here; making friends, meeting tons of people, and seeing God work in some amazing ways. At the same time, we felt it was time for us to start looking to get back home. There were several things we wanted to be a part of back home. We had prayed that God would be preparing our way home, if that's where He wanted us to go. We had talked about the timing of it all and had initially thought August would be a good transition time. But God had another idea.

We had seen God working in a number of ways around Bill's passing, and we saw this as an answer to what we had been asking God to do in our lives. I've mentioned before that I had lined up a job interview for the week we were back home weeks before we left for Chicago. I had told them I would be back in August and that didn't scare them off. As the interview approached, we started to realize this was God's way of saying "it's time."

This is what makes it sweet. We're following God's plan. It became very clear to us that this was the right thing to do almost immediately. Without a plan, we had tremendous peace about it. That makes it really hard to find sorrow in this decision. We'll miss the people here, we'll miss what we're doing, but we know this is what God wants for us right now, so we need to follow, just like we felt when He called us to serve in Louisiana.

While this circumstance that has caused this decision is awful, we're grateful that we have the opportunity to be there for my mom. We are also thankful that we've had the opportunity to see God in a whole new way, to meet such wonderfully special people, to have learned about rebuilding of homes, but more so rebuilding of lives. It has truly been a pleasure.

We are anxious to finish well here. We have a lot of ends to tie up before we leave. We want to be able to spend a lot of time with the people on our team here and with the homeowners we've made connections with. Please pray that this time of transition will go well for all involved. Please continue to pray for my mom and Bill's family as they grieve his death. Pray for the continued work in the city of New Orleans as thousands of people are still without homes to live in. Pray of the ministry to continue sending out people to the community to reach the lost in the Name of Jesus Christ.

Last, but not least, thank you all for your wonderful support. We have appreciated every word of encouragement we've received, every financial donation that has been made on our behalf, and every prayer that was prayed for us in our time here. From the bottom of both our hearts... THANK YOU!!!

Phil (for Phil and Amy)

*Please note that if you are a monthly donor to our ministry, you'll receive a separate email from us in the very near future.

We're on our way home

Finally on the way back to LA. It's been really good to be back home in Illinois the last couple weeks. We've had a chance to see a lot of friends and family. Probably more than we had planned. We're flying out of Milwaukee tomorrow AM and will be back in New Orleans in the afternoon.

We have a lot of catching up to do with our jobs there. The high school youth group from Lakeland will be coming down in just a few weeks. Amy and I are really excited to see them all again and have the privilege of working with them when they get there.

Please be praying for our trip back. Amy got pretty sick last time we flew. We are asking you all to join with us as we prayerfully consider what further impact the passing of my step-dad will have on our term in LA. Please pray for wisdom and clarity over the next few days as we meet with some people in New Orleans. Thanks again to all who offered words of encouragement and prayers to and for us during the past few weeks and please continue both. We love hearing from you.

So here we are... wherever that is.

First off... thanks to everyone who has left notes, comments, emails, voicemails, prayed for us and gave us words of condolence and comfort in this time. All were tremendously appreciated. Please continue to pray for my mom and Amy & I, as well as all of Bill's 8 living children, their spouses, and 20 grandchildren, as we grieve the loss of this wonderful man.

Well, it's been a bit of a whirlwind since last Friday night. We just arrived back to Chicago from Tulsa, OK where we had a funeral service and burial for my step-dad, Bill. We had a wonderful service in the Chicago area. Most of Bill's kids made it to that. That was Monday night. Tuesday night, we flew to Tulsa for a Wednesday night/Thursday morning service. We had a great time at both, getting to see some friends and family and honoring Bill's life on earth and his new birth into eternity! It's funny how death can bring people together and offer a tremendous amount of healing. It's also hard to not see God in all of this. From our presence in Chicago for my mom during this time, to some of the things we're all learning from interacting with one another, God's fingerprints can be seen are all over.

The interview for the job I applied for a couple of weeks ago was this morning. I feel that it went pretty well. I should hear something in the a couple of weeks. Continue to pray for this opportunity as we plan our transition back to IL, whenever that may be.

My mom flies back to Chicago tomorrow night, so pray for a safe, uneventful flight for her. (Unlike ours this morning, Amy's still not feeling well.) Pray for a restful time for Amy and I this weekend and coming week. We are extending our stay here in the Chicago area at least another week, so we look forward to catching up with as many people as we can. Hope to hear from you soon.

Phil

Urgent Prayer Request

My step-dad, Bill, passed away last night. On Thursday, another staff member and I were at the church delivering some supplies. Suddenly there was a storm of NOPD in the area, blocking off streets, etc. We found out later that some was shot and they were looking for him. They quarantined a school that was in session near by.
The other incident was today. Just blocks from the church at a gas station, a man was shot in the back of the head. They don't have any suspects in this shooting.
The scary part about both of these incidents is that they happened in the middle of the day, in heavily populated areas.
Please pray for this area. For safety for the people of the community, the volunteers and the staff that work in the neighborhood. Also pray for justice for the men or women responsible for these crimes, but more so that God would be seen and glorified through these tragedies.
Thanks for all your support!!

Phil

A busy one

We've been a bit busy as of late. Between all the vehicle problems I had the last few weeks and getting ready for teams each week, I've been pretty tired. Last weekend, I don't think I really moved until Sunday, then it was back to work. Not to mention, Amy's been really busy in the kitchen.

So, I'm heading off to Pensacola, FL with a couple guys from CO here for the next couple weeks and another staff member. We're hoping for some good conversations and relaxing time on the beach. Pray for our time there this weekend and for Brandon and Charles, the guys from CO.
We're also gearing up for our trip home. We'll be flying there one week from today and will be there until the following Saturday. While home, we'll be trying to catch up with as many people as possible, check out a baseball game with my dad, and top it all off with an "interview" on Friday. I was poking around online and came across a job that I had applied for before, but didn't get because I needed some more experience. Well, I got that and even worked part time for the company before departing for New Orleans. Amy and I are really excited about this opportunity and another opportunity. We're praying about all these things and asking that you would join with us in prayer for the Lord's will in this area.

A quick update on our friend that was sick. She's feeling much better now. She had to go to the hospital one night because she passed out. While waiting for the doctor to see her, she and her husband just prayed for about an hour. The tests came back totally normal. Kinda strange since she had been diagnosed just days earlier with Mono. But praise the Lord. She's been getting better and better as of late. Thanks for all your prayers for her and our team in her absence. We really appreciate it.

We look forward to seeing those of you in the Chicago area in a week and always look forward to reading your emails and comments. Have a great weekend.

Phil (for Phil and Amy)

A Couple of Prayer Requests

One of our dear friends and team members here in LA is very ill. Monday was riddled with problems for the rest of the construction team. My Monday didn't go too bad. It started Tuesday afternoon. I stopped by a job site in the city and ran in to check on a team of plumbers. About 10 minutes later, while walking out to the truck, I heard tires squealing. I had just poked my head out the door and saw the truck pulling out and rounding the corner. I grabbed for my belt loop where I normally keep the keys to the truck... oops. I took off running through a field towards where the truck was going. A neighbor had heard the commotion and came outside to check on it. We hopped into his car and took chase, all the while, updating the police over the phone. Eventually, we spotted the truck. We pursued it for a while, but after about 10 minutes, we lost it for good. The police stopped their search shortly after. It was gone. Along with a bunch of the ministry's tools (brand new Dewalt 18v cordless tool set), my tool belt, camera, iPod, etc. My heart sank. It's gone. Needless to say, I didn't sleep much that night. Wednesday was without incident, just some processing, which wasn't much fun.
Thursday came about and I needed a truck to haul some materials for Rock of Ages and get the tools. I took the '96 F150 that we call the Spud. It was donated with a bed full of potatoes from Idaho, thus the Spud. got off the highway on my way to Rock of Ages. It was just a couple minutes later as I was sitting at a red light, I was resting my foot on the break when it suddenly lost pressure and went to the floor. "Great... no brakes. This will be fun." I was able to carefully get to the church, which was only a mile away or so. Further inspection... broken brake line to the front brakes. OK. Now what?
I was able to get a ride to our Thursday meeting where we picked up a trailer to tow the Spud back to Trinity for repair. We loaded it up and were on our way. Before we got to the highway, we hit a bump and the trailer jumped the ball, hit the ground, slammed into the back of the truck we were towing it with, and we dragged it by the chains until we could safely come to a stop. "Well, this is going well." At this point, I was pretty discouraged. A long week just got longer. After a trip to Lowe's to get the right size ball on our hitch, we were finally on our way.
All that to catch you up to where we are today. Amy and I are pretty tired. It was really hard to focus on what we were doing last week. There's going to be a little time to recover and try to catch up on some of the areas we lost track of. Amy has been there for me every step of the way, helping me cope with this, as well as helping another family on our team. Mom has mono and dad was with me, so Amy has been watching their kids. She has been great. I would really have been lost without her around.
I'm getting ready for next week, trying to put all this behind me and get back to "normal". We've learned a lot, both as an organization and as individuals, about how to handle situations like this one in the future. It's opened up the door for some good communication.
Please continue to pray that we would all see the good God has planned to come out of this. Pray for the person who took the truck, that they would know God through this. While it was partly my fault, having left the keys in the truck, I know God will provide for exactly what we need. The beauty and mystery of His grace.

Hello everyone!

Greetings from Louisiana, where the weather today is the same as back home. Sunny and 60. It's a nice change from the upper 80's and humidity we'd been feeling the last couple weeks.
Well, Amy and I have been kinda sick again lately. I'm getting over a cold, but I think it's turning into a sinus infection. I've been congested for over a week now and my face hurts when I bend over to tie my shoes. Amy's got strep, along with two or three others here on staff. We've been joking that it's our latest "Staff" infection.
My eyes have been feeling better the last couple of days. After another irritation, I've been wearing my glasses. I got a stye later in the week, but that's gone now, too. I'm hoping to wear my contacts for the rest of the week. My dad sent me some safety glasses that don't fog. I'm hoping that this will help. That way I can still see what I'm doing and keep my eyes safe from debris. I had an appointment with the LASIK guy here in New Orleans. He does 400 procedures a month and did one of my friends eyes. I'm eligible for the procedure and will be doing some additional research on it before I continue with the process. Please be praying for this.
Amy's home church, Grace EFC, was here from Aledo, IL last week. There were about 10 of them here for the week. Amy went out with them for Monday and Friday and I was working with them most of the rest of the week. We worked at Rock of Ages mostly, but found our way to a couple other job sites trying to get them ready for this week. They made a lot of connections with the people in the neighborhood around Rock of Ages. They also had some great ideas for bringing what we do here in NOLA back to Aledo. I'm really excited to see how God uses this trip to further His kingdom through this team.
This is the last week of 100+ volunteers. We'll be slimming down to 40's-50's until school lets out, then it'll be crazy again. Please be praying for the staff here as we will have some time on our hands to plan and prepare for the summer. We are also going to be looking to replace about 6 people that will be leaving between May and the end of July. Thanks to all that read this blog for your support, prayerfully, financially, and with your encouraging words. We really appreciate all you do for us!! God bless.

~Phil

Another great week

The weather has started to warm up into the 80's around here. It's getting pretty humid. I've started bring extra shirts to work this past week. It turns out I sweat a lot. The work at Rock of Ages is moving along at a pretty good clip now. The sanctuary and classrooms are painted. The fellowship hall downstairs is almost ready for texture and the bathrooms are finally drywalled. Thanks to the team from Midland, MI that worked really hard on getting all that done this week. Amy's home church, Grace EFC, will be here next week. They'll be working on the church and another house in the city. I'm hoping we'll be able to close that house out this week. Our volunteer numbers will be coming down a little over the next few weeks. We need to finish up some of these smaller jobs so we can focus our few resources on the bigger projects we have open right now.

You can be praying for our health this week. I've started getting a cold. Amy's doing OK. We've actually had some of our volunteers getting really sick while they are here. Some have even had to make ER visits. Please be praying for this. We don't know what's causing it.

Finally, I've been thinking a lot about 1 Peter 2:9 lately.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

It's just been showing up in different places all this week. First in a couple of songs I was listening to in the truck, then on the backs of the t-shirts the team from MI was wearing. So I thought I would share it with you. Have a wonderful week. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

~Phil (for Phil and Amy)

Seriously... happy Easter

We had a pretty good Easter. We spent the day with some friends, the Nelson's, Liam, and the Prince's at the Prince's house. It was pretty laid back, which is just the way we like it!

We're finally getting back to a regular routine since Amy's return a couple of weeks ago. Of course, now that she's in the kitchen and her schedule has changed, we'll still be adjusting a bit.

Work at Rock of Ages is going pretty well. The drywall will have texture and primer and will be ready for paint on Monday. We'll be getting ready for final flooring then, too! We have a great group from Oregon this week. The Wisconsin team last week was wonderful as well. They got a lot done, including a final coat of the drywall compound. Not easy to do when you haven't done it before, but they were willing to learn and did a great job. The team this week had never textured walls before (nor had I), but they are doing great. Not real technical, but getting the consistency of the spray right is hard to do. The team this week also had a retired framer with them and he was able to take care of some of the problem areas without a problem.

We've met a lot of people at Rock of Ages. Many of them were members of the church before the storm. We found out that the original pastor's wife, who's 100 years old, is holding on to see the church completed. One man was driving past the church. He saw the doors were open and saw one of our volunteers walking out with a bucket. He stopped, walked in the church and was stunned by it's condition. He made a comment, through his tears, that he never thought it would be rebuilt. He was quick to leave to get his father. His dad, Edmond was a deacon at the church. His brother-in-law was the first pastor of the church. We learned he was s plaster wall and drywall installer for fifty years. He was there for the ground breaking and said his shovel was the first in the ground. His son, Clarence, said that the church is all his dad talks about. He was so happy to see the church drywalled and can't wait to come back for that first service. We had a good time hearing Clarence's story from the storm, and how he had to fool his dad into thinking they were going to church so Edmond would leave. Truly a moving story, Clarence was again led to tears as he told his story.

When I first set foot in the church, I felt like this was going to be an awesome project, we'll be able to keep a lot of people busy in our busiest time, and I'll learn a lot about drywall. I've realized this is a lot bigger than just a normal project. I'm not talking about the size of the building. It means more than I can understand to the people of the church, that this church gets back up and running. I know we talk about getting the church outside of the walls and that the church is the body, not the building. And that stuff is all great, but for this body of believers, it's really important that they get their building back. I can't wait for that first service. I know I'll be there.

Bad news medically for me. Turns out I've got a small scratch on the cornea of my right eye. The eye doctor (who goes to our church here) also saw a small ulcer on my eye, which is a known complication with the contacts I wear. It's pretty painful and my eye is really sensitive to light and air. It's a little better right now, but the numbing medicine she used in the office is starting to wear off. I'm really considering Lasik eye surgery. With the nature of the work I'm doing now, it makes a lot of sense. Dust and drywall particles are getting behind my contacts and causing all these problems.

Please continue praying for us. We've made it through the heavy spring break time, but we will still have volunteers in 120's for the next couple weeks, then we'll slow down again. Pray that we'll have the right jobs for the right people and that we'll get the jobs done that we start before the volunteer numbers drop again. Pray for the homeowners we're working with, the people in the neighborhoods we're working in, and specifically the members of Rock of Ages. God bless.

Phil (for Phil and Amy Stokes)

Happy Easter, everyone.

Amy found this video. Home Edition in New Orleans.

Amy got back on Tuesday afternoon. It was really good to see her... even if she was tired. We decided to head right over to the Extreme Makeover Home Edition set.

They were here this past week working on a couple houses and a church in the city. The church is right down the street from the Yellow House and Castle Rock Community Church in Central City, New Orleans. They built the church and houses from the ground up in 6 days. A couple of the construction guys, a couple of Urban Impact staff, and even a team from Washington came over after our work was done for the day at our work sites. We worked well into the night, digging post holes for some stair cases and moving stuff around for the flooring crew to keep working.

Amy and I came back the next day when she got back. When we got there, people were painting in the front of the church and doing a lot of other stuff. Side note: It was amazing to see 100's of people all working on separate projects trying to get the work done in 6 days. At one point during the night, there were 4-5 different heavy machines running around us, carrying a variety of things. It was really neat to see. Especially since we have a much different philosophy for doing the work we do. We see the construction projects as way into relationships with people. So we don't mind if it takes 3 or 4 times as long to get the work done. That just means we're in the community a little longer.

We primed the hand rails on the front steps. One of the builders was going to hook me up with his drywall contractor to work around a door, but we left before he got back with the drywall, so it didn't work out. There were people walking around with video and still cameras. Click here for some pictures of me painting on set. Click "Day 5" and scroll through the pics. You'll see me in my orange hard hat. Those are Amy's white tennis shoes behind me on the stairs.

I went out there for the reveal and got to see some famous faces. Ty, Edward, Michael, and Paige were there for the reveal at the church.

I was really torn about all this. I kept thinking this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. To work on such a huge project, not to mention, high profile. A comment was made in crowd at the reveal. "Once they (the pastor and family) go inside, this place will turn into a ghost town because they won't be coming back outside until filming is done". This struck me. Once this crew is gone, that's it. They're gone. They'll pack up their semi's and buses and go back to where ever they live. We'll still be here. No TV cameras, no audience, just us and our volunteers, making relationships, helping people get back into their houses and churches and, as our shirts say, "showing the love of Christ to those in need".

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://iheartno.blogspot.com/2008/03/extreme-makeover-home-edition-in-new.html' title='Extreme Makeover... After the last post, I was sick for about a week. TIU didn't come until the week after (last week), so I did get to work with them after all. I also made a trip up to St. Louis to see Amy for a couple days. It was good to be together. It had been a couple weeks and I was really missing her. I drove up really early Saturday morning and came back Sunday night. It's been a week, but doesn't seem so long since we were able to see each other. She'll be back early next week. It'll be good to have here home again.

After she gets back, my dad and step-mom will be here to visit. We'll be busy with about 250 volunteers that week, but it'll be fun.

This week we've got about 200 volunteers. I'll have 24 at Rock of Ages and a hand-full at the other job site I'm running in New Orleans East. We're putting drywall up in that house as well. We have about 16 job sites this week, ranging from demolition to finishing drywall, to putting down laminate flooring, interior and exterior painting, roofing. It's going to be busy.

I had an opportunity to pray with a homeowner in Central City last week. Her name is Ms. Geraldine. We're going to be starting to lay down flooring for her. She started to rebuild after the storm and had contractors come in to do the work. They charged her $4000 to put tile in a kitchen, bathroom, and hallway. She paid another man nearly $50,000 for the rest of the house, but he didn't complete the job and left town. We hear stories like this all the time. It's the most frustrating thing the hear. People coming in and taking advantage of these people that are just trying to get back in their homes and start over. Anyway, after all this, she had to undergo open heart surgery. Now she's working 2 full time jobs, 16 hours a day, 5 days a week to pay for the house. She's been going to Castle Rock, our partner church in New Orleans, for about 8 months now.

Please continue to pray for our ministry here. Pray for the homeowners, especially Ms. Geraldine. Pray for our staff, that we would be unified, that God would continue to bless and provide for us. We've all been attacked with spiritual warfare the past couple of weeks. Pray for protection against that. Thank you all so much for your support of our ministry. We look to hear from you soon!

Phil

Sorry... I know it's been a while

A whole week! It seems like longer. It's been a kinda strange week. Amy really felt a burden to be at home with her family last week, so she got on a plane last Saturday and has been hanging out with her family for the last week. She'll return March 11. It's hard being apart. We really miss having each other around. Things have been pretty good besides.

We started work on a church in the city this week. It's called Rock of Ages Baptist Church. If I heard right, they were a congregation of 250 before the storm, now down to 25. They have continued to meet in other churches and have stayed in contact with the community around the church. I've heard a lot about the people in the community being really excited about getting the church back in the neighborhood. We were asked to come in and hang drywall. The church had been gutted sometime ago. This isn't the first time we've sent teams to the church, however. A church from Naperville, IL replaced the roof a while ago (at least this is what I've heard). There were 30 volunteers working there this past week, representing 3 churches. A team from California, Pennsylvania, and North Dakota/Minnesota. There were 3 builders on the teams there so it made my job a lot easier. There were 3 or 4 crews all hanging drywall in different parts of the church. Some of them had never hung a sheet of drywall. By the end of the week, they were calling the shots! Others were installing insulation, others scraping walls and floors, others fixing some of the framing studs in the basement. They even built a wall in the kitchen that will act as a serving window. It was really cool to see all those people working together. Some that hadn't met before this week. They worked really hard and got more accomplished than I anticipated. They completed all but the walls of the sanctuary and a few pieces on the ceiling of the sanctuary. They even had time to put the first coat of mud on in the classrooms. "It's an awe-some spec-ta-cle." We're excited to have 15 more volunteers working there next week from Amy's alma mater, Trinity International University.

Please continue to pray for us as we're apart. Pray for unity and communication in our team as we look to having 1100 volunteers in the next 6 weeks. Pray for the homeowners and people in the communities where we are working. Pray for the teams that are coming to help in the next weeks. Pray that God would be glorified by our actions, words, and thoughts.

Thanks for reading, We look forward to hearing your comments. Also, there is a group on facebook.com called "I served with EFCA Crisis Response". If you've served with us, and you're on facebook, please join. It's a great place to post pictures, stories, videos, etc and keep in touch with others that have served here in NOLA.

Phil

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://iheartno.blogspot.com/2008/02/sorry-i-know-its-been-while.html' title='Sorry... Then the third renter moved out two weeks later. We found out the dishwasher broke in that house and that the pipes had to be roto-rootered so there was some part and labor costs that we would need to somehow cover.

In December, Phil received a speeding ticket on the Causeway...which some down here say that you're baptized into Louisiana by receiving one of those tickets. The ticket was to cost $200!

Two weeks ago I had a hair disaster. I had dyed my hair a reddish color that should have washed out in December. It didn't. I decided to dye my hair lighter because the lighter my hair is, the less I can see that my hair is thinning. Well, it turned out a neon orange! I found someone who could work on my hair on a Sunday, a local lady. She was very friendly and very helpful. Then she said it was going to cost $75! Not what I was expecting at all.

Later on that week, I was beginning to feel the stress of the financial burdens we had put on ourselves. I wasn't going to ask God for help because of my shame in our decisions and my pride. However, that Thursday morning I swallowed my pride and asked God to bless us financially so we could afford to buy groceries for the next week. The next week the ministry was going to be closed which meant we couldn't go to the church for our meals. I had asked God for a certain dollar amount, but said that He knew exactly how much we needed so that I trusted Him with that. I told Him that I don't know where the $ would come from but that He would just somehow miraculously provide for our needs.

Well, later on that day I spent time with a lovely lady from a church in Maryland. She is very lively and I was encouraged by her positive outlook on being here. I shared my hair story with her. She said that she woke up that morning and felt led to give a donation to Phil and I. What?!? The next day she handed Phil $100 cash.

Saturday we went to the grocery store. While in line, I had Phil bring a few items back and knew that we had everything we needed. The cashier said our total was $98.30! Not only did God bless us, he blessed us in abundance. I still have the $1.70 in my purse today. :)

Last night Phil went to traffic court for his ticket, and praise God!!! It got thrown out!

I'm just thankful that God continues to provide, hears my prayers, and teaches me daily to rely on Him. I need to not worry about things. He knows what I need before I even ask.

Great week off!

As many of you know, we had this last week off to regroup and refresh before the spring rush. I'm happy to report that the week was pretty refreshing. Amy and I just hung out most of the week. We had no specific plans set and just went into each day not sure what we were going to do.

We had some friends over for the Super Bowl on Sunday, Monday we worked on a table for our deck out back. We had the chairs already and had got a table off "free-cycle". It's a yahoo group where people from certain areas post offers and requests for items. The key is that everything is free for the taking.

Fat Tuesday we went to a parade on St. Charles St. In the city. The weather was beautiful. Amy and I and a couple of friends were there for the last half of the parade, but even that was about three hours long. We were exhausted and a little sunburned after that, so we went home and relaxed the rest of the day.

Wednesday we caught a movie and that night we went to a friends house for a fish fry. He had caught some catfish and red fish from Lake Pontchartrain and fried it up for us. We finished out the night with some Apples to Apples. Great game. You should play sometime!

Thursday and the first part of Friday was all about the last two seasons of Alias. Good show. Funny story. I thought season 4 was the last season, but when we got to the end of the season... huge cliffhanger. I went out to the video store immediately and got the 5th season.

We finished Alias late morning Friday. We then went on a bit of a journey. We just drove around to some places we'd never been before on the north shore. (We found what must be the only hilly roads in Southern LA). It was a lot of fun.

Saturday we picked someone up from the airport and did some yard/thrift store shopping. We got a couple of good deals. Let me tell you... good thrift stores around here are hard to find.

Today we went to church and did some grocery shopping. We're set to go for the next few weeks. On our way home, we saw a bunch of cars parked along the side of the road approaching our house. We asked someone what was going on and learned of another Mardi Gras parade. This one was for our furry friends, though. It was called Mardi Paws. We took Rusty down to the lake front, but quickly realized he wasn't ready for such a big crowd. We went back home and went for a quick bike ride instead. Good times.

Speaking for myself, I'm ready to get back to work. It's been good to have some time off, but I'm really looking forward to having teams here and doing some work.

At the risk of having this post be really long, I'd like to share something with you all. I got an email from a friend back home tonight. She asked some good questions and I'd like to share my response with you. Nothing real profound, but I had to stop and think, especially about the first question. Not that I wouldn't be able to find hard parts of being here, but rather the hardest. The most rewarding question was cool, too. Hadn't really put that into words yet.Amy may share her response to these questions in a future post as well. Check it out.

It sounds like you're doing well down there...what is the hardest part for you? And the most rewarding? Are you missing the Chicagoland area? And how is the job?

Hardest part: When you are a missionary in a “developed” nation, as opposed to a “third-world” country, there are several challenges. Imagine being a true missionary where you live. We live in a pretty affluent part of the area, while nearly 30% of the people in N.O. live in poverty. It’s also tough because, as you know, America is becoming less and less of a God-centered nation. America is the third largest English- speaking mission field. People have either heard it all before and don’t want to hear any more, or they’re already “Christians”.

Most rewarding: People’s lives being changed, including our own. We see on a day-by-day, minute-by-minute basis how God provides. He provides the right people for the right jobs at the right time every time. He provides everything we need for our ministry. It’s really cool to see God answering prayers (sometimes before we pray!)

Missing Chicago: Parts of it. Definitely the people. Not the weather… especially now. It’s in the 70’s here. Who wouldn’t want that? Strange, but I miss the drivers. In Chicago, everyone drives fast and crazy. And that's fine because you can expect it. In the rural parts, everyone drives slow and obeys the laws. And that's fine because you can expect it. Here, you don't know what to expect. Some drive fast, some drive slow. Some fast then change to slow and vice versa. You never really know what anyone’s going to do. Mostly because they don’t use turn signals very often and when they do it's either too early, or too late! I also miss knowing my way around. I’m getting there, but the roads don’t make much sense. Check out a detailed map of N.O. when you get a chance. You’ll see what I mean.

The Job: Well, it’s been rough, but good. I’ve been learning a lot about the construction tasks we do here. It’s coming along. I get through most of the problems that come up, but it’s nice to know I’ve got a great manager available to help me if I need it.
Sorry for the long post. It's been a great week and I really wanted to share that with you all. (notice I didn't say "y'all" there?) Please continue to pray for our ministry here in New Orleans. We have a busy couple of weeks ahead. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Phil

Urgent Prayer Request!

Please lift up Amy's brother Matt and his kids. There are lies and evil prevailing right now concerning him. Please take 5 minutes to lift Matt up and ask God to continue to give him strength. Please pray that God would reveal the truth in this situation and that people's true colors would shine through. Pray that God would judge in his favor and that his innocence would be proven without question.

Please pray for his kids that they would not be harmed by the evil going on, but would see the love they are being shown. Thanks!

Matt, you are being bathed in prayer right now. Some of you Lakeland folks might recognize the guy in the middle. That's Cabot Ashwill. He's here serving with his church from northern California. His team is staying in the city this week.

We had a good time catching up with him and hearing some of the great things TouchGlobal is involved with overseas, especially in the Congo.
As I mentioned in the last post, we're getting ready for some time off next week. We'll try to get our stuff in order and get ready for the teams coming in March and April. We need to get just a couple of things done, like cleaning out the car and some stuff around the house. Most of all, we're looking forward to spending some good time together.

Our team is saying good bye to a couple of fellow staff members this week. Aaron was in charge of the tools and supplies up at Trinity for the last several months. His commitment is up at the end of this week. He'll be heading back to Denver, CO. He's really excited about what God is doing in that city and he's hoping to be a part of that. Please pray for his ministry to continue in the Denver area.

Kevin and Babette are heading back home as well. They are currently in the application process to serve as long-term staff with Crisis Response. Kevin served as a Construction Site Supervisor and Babette worked with the Debriefing team for the past year. Their kids will be going to school in PA and will finish out the year up north. They will probably be back more permanently in just a few months.

Please pray for these people as they transition to a new area. Pray for safety as they travel. Also pray for long-term staff to replace them (in the meantime for Kevin and Babette). We could use someone to take over the tools and supplies area and some people with construction skill to serve for a longer term. If you know of someone that would be interested in serving in this capacity, please have them contact us!

Another Update

Nothing clever is coming to mind for the title. Well, the pink eye cleared up a couple days later. Antibiotics really help those sort of things. Amy's feeling much better. She made the comment that she's feeling more like herself again. That's a good thing.

Learned a lot from Sam last week. We finished the roof we were working on, though we had to tarp it again last Saturday. It appears there's still water coming in one of the corners of the house. We should be able to fix it. It'll just take a little time and effort. There was a team at the other house I was working on in the city (Thrift's) this week, but only for a half day yesterday. We'll have some more people there next week to hang the gutters outside and finish the drywall and start painting inside. I'll be up on the North Shore next week with a couple of teams finishing off some projects we've been working on. Some flooring, painting, and plumbing at two or three different houses.

We're looking forward to some time off the first week of February. We'll use it to re-group, so to speak, and get some rest. We are expecting a lot of volunteers in March and April. Please pray for jobs. We're in the process of scoping and bidding jobs in the city and some on the North Shore for these teams to go to.

Continue to pray for the health of our team and its members, physically, emotionally, and spirtually. Pray for the homeowners and neighbors we're working with now and will be working with, that they would see God through the volunteers that come.

As always, if you would like to join our support team, please email us. There is a link on the right side of the page if you would like to support us financially. Also, if you would like to bring a team, please email us and let us know. We would love to serve with you.

Take care and have a great weekend!
Phil

Wink... if you love pink eye ;)

Hey everyone. Don't know how many of you are winking... I am, because of the itching. I got pink eye some how. Don't know of anyone else that has it right now, but whatever. I'm on antibiotic eye drops. What fun. It just so happened that the symptoms started while I was trying to shingle a roof. That made things interesting. Should be better in a couple of days.

I'm working with a guy named Sam this week. He's our only volunteer at Trinity this week. He's a building inspector from Maryland. He really knows a lot and has been teaching me as much as I can learn. We've been roofing an addition that we're building for a family at the church. It's supposed to rain tomorrow, so we'll be at Trinity building a wall in the church nursery.

The team from Wyoming finished the roof and got a lot of drywall done in the house I'm overseeing in the city. This week, there's a team from Dixon, IL at the house. They are staying down in the city. One of the guys is really good at drywalling. They should be able to finish a big chunk of it this week. (It's a good sign when the team is getting the stilts ready to mud and tape!)

Amy's feeling a little up and down. She feels good one minute and cruddy the next. Keep praying for her. And also pray for my learning. I'm confident I'll get it, it just takes some time. Continue praying for skilled volunteers and more full-time staff with construction experience. We have some guys leaving and we're looking to God to fill the openings. We're sure that He will.

Leaning on our Savior,
Phil ( for Phil and Amy)

Thank You, Supporters!

Hey everyone! Greetings from a soggy New Orleans.

We just received our donor report from the EFCA. We are just blown away by how God works through this support raising process. We have now raised just over 30% of our needed funding to be here in New Orleans. This is because you have been faithful to God's call in supporting us. We really appreciate all that you give and thanks for continuing to pray for us. If you aren't already supporting us, either financially or prayerfully, and would like to, please let us know. There is a link on the right side of this page, about half way down, that has more information on giving.

It's been a pretty good week for me so far. We have a team here from Wyoming working on the house I'm supervising. They are great. Ten guys with great skill. They are just about done with the roof (should finish this week if the rain holds off!) and the drywall inside is moving right along. There are nine people coming next week and they have all said they're pretty good with drywall, both hanging and finishing. I'm pretty excited to see how that works out. There's still a lot that needs to be done inside and outside the house, but we take it one project at a time. I'll keep you updated.

Amy is still recovering. She has a doctor appointment today just to follow up and see how she's progressing. There is another staff member here that also has been diagnosed with pneumonia. It starts as a cold and progresses. It's our latest "staph" infection with about 3-4 people affected. Please continue to pray for the physical health of our staff, as well as emotional and spiritual.

Much needed update

Thanks to everyone praying for Amy and I. She's feeling a little better. She's been coughing a lot. We're hoping she starts feeling better soon. My back is feeling OK right now. We had a team here from PA. They Did a great job on the drywall job we're working on. I learned a few little shortcuts and I'm excited to get back at on Monday morning. At that same house another church from Vancouver worked on the roof... to make sure the rain didn't ruin the drywall we just put up. They were able to get a lot done in a short amount of time. It was good to get back to work after not having teams the last couple weeks, even though I spent most of the week trying to knock the rust off, if you know what I mean. We are now getting word that there will be over 130 people here each week in March! We are still in need of a bunch of volunteers, especially with construction experience. Again, if you or someone you know would like to come and serve, please let us know. Even if you or someone you know doesn't know that they would like to come and serve, let us know. We have some "techniques". ;)

We're gearing up for a New Year's Party this weekend. We know... New Year's has already happened, but we all had to work the next day, so not many of us were able to really celebrate. So we'll count down just before 10pm Saturday night, Jan 5th. Good times.

Please keep in touch. We LOVE hearing from you guys, either by comments on the blog or emails, or whatever. It really encourages us and brightens our days. You don't have to be profound, just a quick hello and how things are going in your life is great. Also, please keep praying. We're getting more settled in our roles, but there is still some adjustments being made, and as I mentioned in previous posts, we feel under attack from time to time, so continue to pray that we would be protected from those attacks. Most of all, be praying that through the work we are doing here and the work the volunteers are doing, that God's glory would be seen in us and through us and that His Kingdom would go forth. Hope to hear from you soon!

Phil

Oh, one more thing. Amy and I had intended on sending out Christmas cards this year, but do to a system problem in MN, we weren't able to get addresses and cards sent out in time. We apologize and want to let you know that we are really grateful for your love, support, and prayers during this time. God bless you all!

Final Amy Update

CT done... nothing in the abdomen, but they saw a little something in the left lung. Chest xray revealed a small amount of pneumonia. ER Doc said he probably would have missed it on chest xray alone, it was so small. They'll load her up with some antibiotics via IV and give her some to take home. Good thing we came in. It could have gotten much worse. Should go away in the next couple of days. Thanks to all who were up and able to pray for Amy. Keep praying. She'll still be recovering for the next few days. Hope you all have a wonderful week.

Phil

I've deleted the other posts to make room for the previous posts, but here's the first part of the story. Amy had felt pretty sick the few days before Christmas. She had a fever and some abdominal pain.

Update: She's feeling a lot better. Still doesn't have much energy, but the fever and abdominal pain is gone. She's coughing a bit. We're waiting for that to become really productive. She's taking an antibiotic and some over the counter meds to help. Keep us in your prayers.

Merry Christmas!!

Good Afternoon and Merry Christmas to you all!

I just came back from working in the free store at Trinity Church. I helped check families in and also helped wrap up Christmas gifts for the children. It was such a blessing to work side-by-side with some church members who donated to purchase the gifts.

Tonight we will have a missionary friend, Frannie, stay with us and we will take her to the airport in New Orleans early tomorrow morning. The Prince Family will join us for Christmas along with Miss Joan, a church member. We are excited to share our home with them.

My family arrives the day after Christmas so I'm hoping to have a clean home so I can relax and enjoy our time with them. (See my mom and dad below)

Please pray for Phil right now. His old back injury is flaring again and he is in a lot of pain. Please join us in praying that God will heal him from this pain and that it will never return. God's using him in mighty ways with the teams that volunteer and the home sites he is working at. We're praying for him to be healthy. Thank you!

We hope you all have a very Merry Christmas, safe travels to wherever you might journey, and are filled with the love of Christ this holiday season.

Blessings,
Amy and Phil

Thank you, supporters!

We finally received our donor report today. We hadn't been able to view it since we moved here so we are glad to be able to know where we are at financially. Thank-you to the Lakeland Crossing youth group who committed to pray us through our support-raising. Your prayers are coveted and God is providing! When we left Chicagoland we were at 11%. We are now over 20% supported.

We have been here for two months already. I divided the months up and at 2 months we would need to have 16% to remain here for the year, which we have now exceeded. At 3 months we will need to have 25% raised and that will go up as we continue throughout the year.

Thank you to everyone that has supported us or pledged to support us prayerfully, financially, or by helping us in your own way during the move and while we are here. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law), so as to win those not having the law. 22To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. 23I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

These have been my theme verses for some time now. Ten years ago I told God that I would go wherever it was He wanted me to go. I wanted to be a missionary and spread God's Word overseas. Now, ten years later, I'm in Louisiana! Louisiana is not overseas. You don't have to fly for two days to get there. You don't have to speak another language. But it is a mission field!

Due to the hurricane, there are many lives, hearts and homes to be rebuilt piece-by-piece. God is showing favor on this area and I am seeing it in answers to prayer, vivid dreams, and the challenges we are facing.

I have been praying for the church we have partnered with here. The ministry's goal is to equip, empower and release the body for effective ministry within their community. I was a little disappointed to find out that the past two quarterly church work days, where the church helps other church members or people in the community, had been cancelled, some say due to lack of interest. I kept thinking, this isn't what the body is supposed to look like.

Paul reminds me that in order to reach people, I need to assimilate into their culture and build relationships so I can reach them. I cannot be a person on the outside, judging their way of life, expecting them to change. We began to pray more intentionally for the church and the community.

Well, two weeks ago, the pastor of the church here preached on these verses. He challenged the congregation to be the church and reach out to their neighbors and their friends. He said that we can be in the church service and say we will do this and then go home and forget about what we heard. But, to me, this means helping a neighbor that I see in need. This means spending the five minutes on the phone to listen to a friend in need and pray for them, even when my 'schedule' doesn't have room. It's a choice that I'm going to have to make so that "by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings."

God's reminded me of our purpose in Louisiana....it's HIS! A few blogs ago we asked, "Why are we here?" I don't know if we will have a clearer answer to that question, but our purpose is clear.

On our way home

Well, I know I said we try to update more often. We just didn't have a chance this week. We went back to Illinois this last week to pick up Rusty and some other things from home. It was good to see some good friends and my family. We had a pretty good time though Amy and I both feel under the weather. I guess we're not used to that cold weather in Chicago anymore :) We are looking to get back to N.O. late Monday. We'll probably be moving to our new place late Tuesday and Wednesday. You should have received our new address in the blog update email. If you didn't, let me know and I'll resend it. Please continue to pray for us as we transition into another new place. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

New living situation

I know it's been a while since we blogged. We've been really busy. So here we go. I'll try to keep it short... right.

This week has been pretty good. We've found a new place to live. We've decided that Amy must be allergic to something here. I've been mostly fine for the last few weeks, but Amy has been waking up with headaches everyday. We stayed the night at a friends house while we were babysitting a couple of nights ago, and Amy didn't have any problems waking up. Also, it's a little bigger then the 300 sq ft trailer we're in now. It's got a guest room for us to have company, which is really important to us. We love having people over and we both feel we have the gift of hospitality. Amy is going to do some work from home time to time, so this will allow her to have the space to do that... comfortably. We'll be able to get some of our stuff from home and make our new place a lot more "ours". We'll also be able to have a pet there as well. Rusty... welcome to Louisiana! We're really looking forward to it.

We haven't had any teams here this last week, but we have some this coming week... then it's another week without teams (that's when we're moving). As you can imagine, we are getting desperate for teams. Especially teams with "skilled" laborers (carpenters, electricians, plumbers, masons, metal workers, dry wall hangers) to help start new projects and finish some of the older ones. Please be praying for this. We could also use a few of these people on staff. Pray for this as well. If you would like to organize a team or know someone that would, please email us. We can give you the best time frame for you to come down and serve.

Lastly, we've heard a lot of people are checking the blog and disappointed that it's not updated enough. We hear you. Part of the problem is that we're pretty busy, but we're going to give it a try. You may be worried you're going to get a bunch of emails from us letting you know it's updated. That's not going to happen. I'll still send out an update, but only once a week. Continue to check back throughout the week, if you think of it. Be patient with us though. We've got a lot to do with moving and all, but we'll try to keep you up to date. Hope you all have a wonderful week. Stay safe... don't let the snow get ya down! We look forward to hearing from you soon.

"What are we doin' here?"

This has been our question since we arrived in late October. "Why are we here?" It is evident that God cleared the path for us to come here, but why did He want us here? There's been a lot going on the last couple of weeks. Between getting acclimated to the area, and a new job, we weren't really sure which way was up. Praise God that we finally feel like we're getting our bearings and that we have some answers to the questions above.

Amy had really been struggling with what to do here. She very badly wanted to use her skills and giftedness to help organize the communication aspect of the ministry. While met with some frustration early on, she's had some good conversations to help encourage her in what she can be doing to get started with that. She gets to coordinate the communication area which includes: press kits/church kits, website maintenance, and various other things. She's got two wonderful and very capable people on her team, and I will also be helping with some communication items now and then. She also found a new passion she wants to explore.

Early this last week, Amy came out to a job site with me. She took some pictures and talked with the team that was here serving from Hershey, PA. She had a wonderful time. She decided to make a DVD using pictures of all the teams here this week and give each team a copy. Someone does this for teams that stay in the inner-city and she wanted to give it a try for teams up here as well. It's great for teams to have something they can bring home and show their churches what they did while they were here. Here's the first video.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v2.nonxt5.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Dd1ed050195515e16%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331550452%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D2CF2A03E4D3ED04B1C500472ABC969ECC3B10792.82B17BE05E05DA90AF8E8EAE22A08DBC55DCBBEE%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Dd1ed050195515e16%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DuaYeItc1Vwk-HBDyemRgtcVH8Bs&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Currently, we are organizing an inventory of all the tools that have been donated and purchased. Between that and running supplies to teams all over the North Shore (Covington, Slidell, Lacombe, and Mandeville), I've been really busy. I'm really learning a lot. Whether it's how we do things, or how to measure a drywall job, or what tools we need, there's something new everyday. Like I mentioned above, I've also been helping out with some of the communications here. We just uploaded the latest Katrina Project video on YouTube. You can view the video from this page. Go to the top of the page and play the video on the right. I've also included a link to the video in the "links" section. Check it out.

Please continue to pray for us. We're still adjusting. Please pray for the people here in the New Orleans area. Also check out the EFCA Katrina Project website (Link Section) for supplies we need. One more note. If you would like to send a team, we are in need of skilled labor (carpenters, drywall hangers, electricians, plumbers, HVAC, general construction, etc). If you or someone you know would like to come and serve for a week, let us know.

If you are interested in supporting us, prayerfully or financially, please let us know. Thanks to all who have prayed for us and the ministry here in New Orleans. We've raised about 15% of our monthly support needed, so thanks to all who have donated and made a monthly commitment as well. We really appreciate your support.

We appreciate your feed back. We're about to start our first full week here. I will be running tools and supplies around the North Shore (Covington and surrounding areas). Amy will be working in the office.

Last week was good. We were able to get a little more settled in our house. After searching for a suitable place to sit in our living room, we found a small love seat at the thrift store for $45, which was $10 less than the other ones. It was in OK shape, but we decided to wait before buying. When we returned later in the afternoon, the workers told us there was a donation on the back of a pick-up outside, if we wanted to look. It was perfect. The right size, no stains, no springs sticking out, just perfect. The "pricing lady" recognized us from earlier and priced it lower than all the others, $35. And it would've been the best one in the store. Praise the Lord!

Please continue to pray for our transition. We're still adjusting to the new area and new people. Amy and I have not been feeling very well. We both have a cough and congestion that has been lingering for the past week. Please pray for healing.

Please pray for Amy in the office. She is used to working in an environment where she knows exactly what her responsibilities are and is able to just take initiative and go with things, but that hasn't been the situation down here just yet. She is having a difficult time transitioning. Please pray that she will feel comfortable in her new surroundings soon and will be able to use the giftings the Lord has given her.

We have enjoyed hearing from some of you and hope to hear from more of you soon. Let us know what is going on in your lives and how we can be praying for you.

We're HERE!!

Sorry it's been a long time since we updated. You can imagine why. From packing and moving out of our house and having people move in, and planning the trip down with the team and moving... it's been crazy. But good. We had a lot of time to say "see you later" to our friends and family and dog. We really miss everyone, but we're so excited about being here. Plus, we know we'll see everyone soon. I know of some that will be here around Christmas, and some later.

Well, I'll go back to the last update and work from there. The move went pretty well thanks in big part to the Senior High group from Lakeland, the Crossing. It's was so much fun hanging out with all of them, packing and loading the trailer. A handful of them came with us to New Orleans to help us unpack and unload our stuff into the trailer we're staying in. They then stayed the rest of the week... but I'll get to that in a bit. The trip down was a lot of fun. There were four in each vehicle, and we all had a great time. We left early Sunday the 21st. Good thing too. It took us close to 17 hours to get here. Mostly because of long stops and a 20-30 mph head wind. This made towing the trailer an adventure!

The unpacking went pretty well, and it wasn't long before we realized we had brought a bit too much. We sent a bunch back to storage. After a fairly long day stuffed into a small trailer in Covington, the eight of us piled back into the vehicles, and started to make our way to the Yellow House. The Yellow house is where the team and staff live while serving in Central City New Orleans. It's right down the street from Castle Rock Community Church. Here's where the story gets interesting.

It had been raining pretty much all day. We didn't think much of it while we were inside, but once we started driving, we realized it was much more rain than any of us had every seen. The ditches were completely flooded and the water was running over into parking lots and onto the streets. As we approached the Lake Pontchartrain, we learned the Causeway, a 24 mile bridge over the lake, was closed to bigger vehicles due to high winds. Not to mention, the streets of New Orleans were flooded to about 2-3 feet in some areas. The Army Corp of Engineers were out checking the levees and closing gates in areas to keep the water out. We then learned of the a tornado watch in effect over the lake and on the north shore, where we were. We made some phone calls and ended up at Trinity in Covington for dinner and decided to stay the night there. Besides, we didn't know what we'd be working on in the city... no one did. So we offered to help with whatever needed to be done on the north shore... sandbagging, water removal... whatever.

As it turned out, the rain stopped shortly after we went to bed. The water was gone in the morning. They didn't really need us to do any sandbagging or anything so we decided to head into the city and get settled in. It was now Tuesday and most of the projects were started or near completion by the other teams. We offered to do whatever needed to be done. We learned of a cleaning job near the Urban Impact offices. There had been a fire alarm the night before. When attempting to leave out the fire escape, the door was blocked by some garbage cans and debris in the walk way. It all needed to get cleaned up.

There was a lot of garbage. I had a feeling we’d be back the next day to clear a field of debris behind this building, so we left that nasty can for another time. I don’t have any pictures of the giant cockroaches or the huge spiders because as soon as they surfaced, they were crushed. Girls with shovels are not to be taken lightly when you’re a ½ pound roach or a hairy spider.

As I mentioned above, we returned the next day to clear a field behind this building . It was mostly full of old sheets of plywood and other building materials. It took about half the day to clear and it was off to lunch!! We ate at a really cool restaurant in Central City called Café Reconcile. Check out the website here. They have really good food and their mission is to teach youth in the area culinary skills and after Katrina, started to teach construction skills as well. Check ‘em out. It’s pretty cool. We went back a couple of times. Amazing catfish! Thursday we cleaned up some at the church and started a painting project at Castle Rock. We had a great time painting the two rooms. A lot of trim work and 12 ft ceilings. We weren’t able to finish, but we got a lot done.

Super Friday went well. For those who haven’t made it down here yet, all the teams from both Covington and Central City gather for a Rally in the neighborhood. We circle up, get LOUD and get pumped up to go out to clean up the streets and talk to neighbors. We work for a couple of hours and head back to the rally area where the “Hot Dog Truck” meets us and feeds the teams and neighbors from a grill mounted in the back of a pickup truck. It’s a lot of fun and a great time to hang out with the other teams and with the people from the neighborhood.

On our way back to Covington, where the team would be staying before departing back to Illinois, we took a tour of the upper and lower 9th ward. We first went back to the first house we worked on in the upper 9th ward when Crossing went to New Orleans. (Thanks for the directions Karen!!) It was all boarded up and it didn’t look like much was happening with it. A lot of the houses that were there last June were gone. A church that had caved in was gone. The area was still mostly uninhabited. We then went over to the lower 9th ward, near the Industrial Canal Levee break. It was amazing to see it was still a “ghost town”. Further inland from the canal, people are rebuilding their homes… on stilts, but rebuilding all the same.

The team returned to Illinois the next morning, and I hear reports that the trip was really good. They made it back in about 15 hours. Not bad with 6 people and towing a trailer! We had a wonderful time with the team that came down. It was really a blessing to have familiar faces around as we transitioned. We look forward to seeing many others while we’re here.

So that was the trip. Thanks to all who prayed for our time here last week. Please continue to pray for Amy and I as we continue to transition into a new phase of our lives. We start tomorrow. We felt it was a good idea to take some time to get settled and rest before starting. Pray also for financial support. We are at about 15% of our total support needed. If you are interested in donating, follow the link on the right to the EFCA website. If you have any questions about this, please let me know. Thanks again to all of you for your prayer and financial support. We really appreciate it.

Getting Close!

We are in the mid stages of packing up items for the move on the 21st. It's hard to believe we've accumulated so much stuff in the past 6 years, but it has been so refreshing and freeing to get rid of "stuff" that we don't need.

We are well on our way for support-raising, but not quite where we need to be this close to departure. We need to have 50% of our support raised at this stage and we only have 11% of our monthly support raised so far. We are praying that the Lord would provide. He's provided so much to clear the path for us to go to New Orleans, we have confidence that His provision will follow us there. We included our pledges for the year in the figures below:

There are at least 4 people going with us to New Orleans on a team from our church. Phil's mom might be going with us for the week. (She was on our team that went back in April, too.) This is an answer to prayer as we were looking for another adult to come on the trip.

This past week, the Lord (once again) answered a prayer of ours. We had been praying for a cargo trailer to bring with us. U-Haul had one we could rent for 2 days/one-way that was nearly $600, much more than we had anticipated spending. As we've continued to pray and to search for one, we ended up finding one in Round Lake that we could rent for 2 weeks and it would cost about half as much as U-Haul. Yea, God!!! Thanks to a family in the church, we will be able to pick up the trailer early next week and haul it with us on the 21st.

This next week will be a difficult one for us as we will be saying good-bye to family and friends. We are bringing a web cam with us to keep in contact via the internet from time to time. If you have Yahoo Messenger or MSN Messenger, let us know. Don't forget, our email address is: weheartno@gmail.com.

Until next time...

Great Garage Sale and Google Group

Hello everyone.

We had a garage sale this past Saturday and it went really well. We had a constant flow of customers. Amy and I had several opportunities to share with our neighbors and others what we're going to be doing for the next couple years. We made a significant amount of money, around $400, and got rid of a lot of stuff. What we didn't sell, we donated to Goodwill. Over all, I'd say it was a success. Many thanks to all that helped out on Saturday or donated items to be sold.

We had our second renter move in on Thursday last week. It's been a bit of a transition, but we were able to get him moved into our room. Amy and I have been staying at my mom's house at night, and spending the daytime at the house, getting ready to move.

You may have received an email from me or Google, asking you to join our Google group. We set this up so that we could email each person on our list individually and avoid the email system from spamming our emails. There is nothing you need to do beyond joining the group with your email address. You will then start receiving emails from the group instead of from me. You won't have to go and check the group or anything. Please email us if you have a questions or concerns about this.

Lastly, our prayer requests for this week. Amy and I will be traveling to her parents house in the quad cities this coming weekend. Please pray for safe travels. Also, it's becoming a bit overwhelming with all that's going on, our house is a mess with stuff in limbo, etc... please be praying for our spirits, our relationship with one another, and that we would not feel so overwhelmed that we feel defeated.

Praise and Prayer

We returned Friday from the Strategic Planning meetings for TouchGlobal Crisis Response staff, held at Trinity Church in Covington, Louisiana. While down there, we were told we needed to set a date to move as the need is great for us to be there. I will be the Media/Communications Manager with the responsibilities of maintaining the Katrina Project website, updating and editing the Relief Cast monthly newsletter, and contacting 150 new churches in the next year to promote awareness and encourage participation in the relief efforts. I will also be the On-boarding Coordinator responsible for connecting with new missionaries to Covington/New Orleans pre-deployment, providing them with resources to connect them with the missionary staff and the local church, and to pray with them as they make the transition. Phil will be working with supplies/tools and will also be a Field Coach to come alongside new missionaries in helping them assimilate to their new lives in Louisiana. That being said, we are moving to Covington, Louisiana on Sunday, October 21st. (Phil’s 28th birthday)
We are bringing a team with us from Lakeland EFC to serve that week in Covington/New Orleans. If you are interested, please contact us as soon as possible so we can get you connected with a team.

God has made it clear to us that this date is the one he wants us to move on. We are trusting Him that He will provide the financial support that we need committed in the next four weeks in order to make this move. We have seen God’s direction and provision with clarity and He has answered our prayers. Praise God! Within 24 hours of flying down to New Orleans, we had two more monthly supporters and 1 additional renter with another possible renter as well. God has provided!

Thursday morning on our way to the airport, I got really car sick. By the time we checked our bag and checked in, I felt worse. Walking made me sick. We decided it would be best to not fly out and to wait until I was feeling better. I was also having a terrible headache…extreme pain. I had been having headaches for two weeks straight with little to no relief. I woke up with one and went to bed with one.

Seven hours and two Dramamine later, we began to look into our travel options. Phil was told at the airport that it was going to cost $100/person to change our flights. He called the airline and they said it was going to be $176/person to fly out Friday. That would cost us over $350 that we weren’t prepared for. Phil then started to call car rental companies to see about renting a car and driving straight through the night. That would’ve cost ½ as much, but neither one of us were up to pulling an all-night driving marathon, plus we could only rent a vehicle from one airport and drop it off at another.

We decided that we would just eat the cost and pray that God would provide. As Phil once again called the airline, he prayed and asked God to intervene. He asked that God would provide the finances to cover the extra cost. Phil booked us on the first Friday flight to Chicago. Then I saw him kicking his feet in excitement as the person he spoke with told him the cost. He got off of the phone to tell me the good news. It was only going to cost $25/person to change our flight. YEA, GOD! There is no explanation other than God providing for us and hearing our prayers.

Encouraged by this, we settled back into the camper for the night. I decided that I was going to pray about my headache. I had been trying everything on my own to get rid of it, but hadn’t simply asked God to take it away. I told God that I knew I couldn’t get rid of it on my own, and that I was tired of relying on myself to fix it. I asked Him to take away my headache. Within seconds…yes, seconds…my headache that I had for TWO weeks was gone. COMPLETELY GONE!!! I woke up Friday still with no headache and today, no headache. GOD is AWESOME!!!! All I had to do was humble myself before Him and admit that I can’t do things on my own. Turning it over to the Lord was all He wanted of me.

As we prepare for this next season of ministry in our lives, we have many hurdles to jump. I need to tie things up at work, which will be very difficult for me. I have never grown to love an Employer, Manager and Co-workers as much as I have at Great Lakes Credit Union. It is going to be very difficult for me to leave there. But I know that I have their support in doing this so I ask that you pray for me emotionally as I transition out. Another difficult thing for us will be leaving the Crossing Sr. High youth group. This has been our ministry home and family for the past few years.

We will be packing up a lot of things in our house and will be looking to sell items and find temporary homes for items in the next few weeks. We will most likely have a garage sale on Saturday, September 29th and if you have items to donate or would be willing to help us price the night before or sell that day, any help would be much appreciated. We will use the $ raised at the sale to cover our moving expenses and the drive down to Covington, where we will be moving into a small trailer in a trailer court a few miles away from Trinity Church.

We also humbly ask for prayer and financial support to help us be the Hands and Feet of Christ in serving Him by serving others as missionaries. If you have pledged to support us and have sent in your donation, please let us know as this past week we learned that if you do not designate correctly on a check which name and account # you are donating to, the support does not get applied to the correct account. Once a donation is made, you will receive a receipt in the mail with another envelope to continue to send in the monthly support. You can also look at the options to donate support on the right-hand side of our blog. We are updating our blog weekly, sometimes daily. Please visit for current prayer requests and updates of what the Lord is doing. http://www.iheartno.blogspot.com/

Please email us and feel free to forward this email to anyone that you think may want to join our prayer or financial support base. weheartno@gmail.com

My life lesson this week: God hears the needs of His children and blesses them.

God Bless and Bless God!

<><
Amy (for Phil and Amy Stokes)

Greetings from New Orleans; part II

The last couple days have been pretty productive days. Praise the Lord for the work we were able to accomplish. It was really good to get some background on the ministry were are going to be working with and also talk about this coming year. It was good to take a look back and see what has been going on here with the staff. It is really cool seeing how God has been making Himself more real to them, but also revealing to them ways they can continue to move forward more efficiently.

In the past few days we were told to set a date to move down here and to do it. Really cool news but a huge leap of faith on our end. We've been waiting for this date for sometime now, and after much praying and planning and seeking the Lord and changing plans and so on... OCT 21, 2007!! We are so excited about this. On one hand, we now have a deadline to raise support, get the house packed up, etc... and that can be stressful. On the other hand, it's a huge relief!

We are planning to bring a team down with us that week. If you are interested in joining us for that, please let us know as soon as possible.

If you are interested in supporting us prayerfully and/or financially, please let us know. There is a place on the right of our blog to donate online or set up a bank EFT withdrawal.

Thanks again for your love, prayer and support!

Greetings from New Orleans

Hello everybody! First of all, I want to thank all of you for your prayers. Our travels yesterday were not only safe, but somewhat enjoyable. We made it through airport security at O'Hare in about 3 minutes. Upon our arrival to baggage claim in New Orleans, our bags were one of the first out. Our ride arrived about ten minutes later, and we were off! Amazing.

Well, as we prepare to meet this morning, we ask that you would be praying for our time. That it would be encouraging, insightful, and productive. Most of all, pray that the Lord would be in our midst.

Also to note, we got word from back home that a second renter will be moving in in the next weeks! Praise the Lord. There is a possible third renter that was looking at the place last night. Please continue to lift this up in prayer.

I will be updating here daily this week, so please check back often.

If you are interested in supporting us prayerfully or financially, please email us:
weheartno@gmail.com

Still Pluggin' Along

I was thinking back on this week, I first thought that not much had changed or happened since our last post. How easily we forget how God sustains us.

I'll start with this weekend. Amy's folks were here with her brother, Matt, and his kids, Isaac and Taylor. We had a pretty good time with them. Our focus was to get some stuff done around the house to shore up some small issues. We were able to get most of the list completed, and than some! We recently had some water in our basement that did a little more damage than it normally does. The water doesn't come in through the foundation, but rather the window wells. Our goal was to seal off the windows in question. We considered a couple of options and settled on 3/4 inch pressure treated plywood. In the midst of pre-drilling holes in the metal, my drill bit found its way into Amy's dad's little finger, fracturing the bone, and possibly leaving a little metal behind. OUCH! After a couple hours in an immediate care facility near our house, we were on the way back home, finger splinted and wrapped. Needless to say, we took it a little easier the next day. Please be praying for continued healing for his finger and comfort as that process takes it course.

We found out this week that the mission board at our church is going to support us in our trip to New Orleans for the Strategic Planning meeting. Thank you all for you prayers in this area. We really appreciate and rely on your prayer support.

We are still working through some paper work. We sent in the most important forms, but need to finish that early this week. We are hoping to hear from EFCA about our health insurance. At this point, we don't know where or how this need will be met, but we are confident in our Lord, that He will take care of this. Please pray with us regarding this issue.

No update on the roommate situation. Please continue to pray, not only for the probable roommate, but also for one more.

We are planning on a yard sale in the near future (maybe next Saturday). If you are interested in helping with this (set-up, tear-down, etc...) please email us. We'll contact you when we know the date! We may also need some help during the week before the sale to organize and price the items. This is a two-tier deal. We are trying to downsize as well as make some money.

Lastly, we have been blessed by the support we've raised. As we posted last week, we have some goals for support raising. As a response to that post, we now have 1-$100, 1-$50, & 2-$25 supporters. Each of these is per month! Thank you all so much. If you are interested in supporting us at one of these pledge levels or making a one time donation, or interested in becoming prayer supporters, please let us know by email.

Moving forward, this week Thursday, we will be meeting with the elders at our church to talk about our plans. Also, next Sunday will be the congregational business meeting at Lakeland. The main focus of this time will be the new mission statement, which I believe is a great step in the life of the church. Also discussed will be the upcoming budget. Please pray for these meeting this week. Pray for wisdom of the elders and others in this coming week.

Thanks again to all of you for your support. Please continue to pray.

weheartno@gmail.com

Pledging/Support Raising

We received our acceptance package this week. We now have our donor # and address to send support. It will be listed below in the Strategic Planning blog. Right now, we do not have the ability to accept pledges to be sent to the EFCA, however, in order to get some indication of where we need to go with our support-raising, we have come up with an idea that will help us track where we are at.

We set a few goals in regards to monthly pledges and one-time donations for support. At first we were hesitant in setting these, but are trusting that the Lord will provide. Our first goal is for 10 people/families to pledge $100/month for a minimum of 1 year. (We would like to be there for 2 years, but realize we should make that decision prayerfully after being there at least a few months.)

Our second goal is for 20 people/families to pledge $50/month for a minimum of 1 year. Our third goal is for 40 people/families to pledge $25/month for a minimum of 1 year. One-time donations will also be gladly accepted and can be sent right away to the EFCA address listed below.

If we reach our first 2 goals, we will have enough support pledged/raised to be able to deploy to New Orleans. Please prayerfully consider one of these opportunities to support us. If you are interested in pledging support, please email us at: weheartno@gmail.com, and we will get you the necessary information as soon as it is available to us.

The Lord has blessed us indeed with a great prayer support base! Thank you! Please continue to pray for this time of transition for us and for the hearts of those we will come in contact with while in New Orleans. May HIS name be known to all the nations!

Fund Raising for Strategic Planning

Hello everybody. We wanted to post an update on our situation. We've been really encouraged about the work God is doing in our lives. I shared last week that we needed to sell our 2nd car. Well, after a couple of set backs, it looks like we'll be able to sell that car to my dad! We've also had some exciting news regarding another renter. He's about 95% sure of moving in around October. Please continue to pray for these things. Though we have people in place, we understand things happen, so we don't want to get our hopes up, but we're encouraged all the same that our Lord is providing for our needs!

I also shared last week that we were planning to attend the Strategic Planning meeting in N.O. in two weeks. Amy had a wonderful idea to raise funds to pay for plane tickets. Her and a few girls from the youth group were able to make a about 50 of the bracelets (pictured above) . We started selling them at youth group on Friday night. There is a suggested donation of $5 for them and it's worked out really well! We are certainly on our way. We've raised almost $100 of the $400 we need to pay for the plane tickets. We are thinking of giving bracelets to all of our supporters. We hope it would serve, not only as a reminder to our supporters to remember us in their prayers, but also as a conversation-starter with their friends and families.

Please continue to pray for us as the Lord brings us through this transition. We long to fully rely on Him, knowing that we can't do it on our own. Please ask the Lord to be working in us in this way.

We are compiling a list of names and email addresses of those who wish to support us financially and those who commit to praying for us every week. We got the email Thursday. I've been meaning to update this, but just haven't had the time. So here it goes.

After an extensive application process that we've shared here before, we had a final phone interview on Tuesday the 14th. The person that interviewed us actually went to college with Amy. He is one of three that interview potential missionaries. The others were out of town; one in Asia, the other in Peru. Well, as you may have heard, there were some serious earthquakes in Peru... the next day. He was OK, but this delayed their decision a bit. They also wanted to clarify some of my theology. This also delayed their decision. Finally last Thursday, we received the news that we were official.

Thanks you all for your prayer and support through this process. Our next steps will be raising our financial and further prayer support. We need to have/ have committed 50% of our monthly budget for deployment. We think that our budget will be around $4,000 per month. We are also still looking for more renters for our house. Seth (the youth pastor from Lakeland) has been staying with us and will continue to stay here while we're gone. He's been looking for roommates and has some good prospects in mind. To ease a little of the burden on him, we are also looking for a handyman to help us fix the house if anything happens while we're gone. We are also looking for someone to buy our 2nd car from us.

These are some of the long term things we'll be looking to take care of. We do have an immediate need as well. There is an annual strategic planning meeting that is going to happen in New Orleans on September 18-19. We don't think we'll be ready to move there by then, but our attendance was requested and we think it would be important for us to be there. We're looking for plane tickets and the cheapest we've found was $199/per person round trip.

Please join us in praying for these things. Also, as we make the transition, continue to pray for God to use this time to grow us closer to HIM and to each other. As you can probably imagine, it's a big step to move away from all you've known. It can be pretty scary. Pray that God would continue to prepare us for this, and continue to provide for us in this time.

We are compiling a list of names and email addresses of those who wish to support us financially and those who commit to praying for us every week. If you would like to be on that list, please email us. weheartno@gmail.com

Our "Missionary" pic - July 2007

Urgent Prayer Requests

This week has been a trying one, but the Lord has been faithful! We wanted to share a couple prayer concerns that are on our hearts right now. Please join us in lifting these up to the Lord. It is our intent to be honest with you all about what we are struggling with, rejoicing in, and experiencing as we seek to follow the Lord's leading for our lives...

Last Monday on the way to work, Phil was in a car accident. No one was injured, but our car got pretty smashed up in the front. Thankfully it was all cosmetic and we will be getting it back, all repaired, sometime next week. Praise God no one was seriously injured! However, the accident has activated an old injury that Phil had. He hurt his back at work several years ago and wasn't able to work for 9 months. Last week, his back started to hurt again after the accident and the pain has not been alleviated as of yet. Please pray that the Lord would heal his back and make him free of pain.

Now, even more personal, we also ask that you please lift up Amy's brother's family in prayer. Without going into any in-depth details, Satan is attacking them. Please pray that her brother would be strong in the Lord during this difficult time and that his wife would be given Spiritual wisdom and truth that only comes from the Lord and that they both will experience the love God chose to give them; the love for His bride, the reason His son shed his blood, the love they committed to share together when they took their wedding vows. Please pray that the Lord would rescue their marriage. They have two young children. This is why what is happening with them saddens our hearts the most! Please pray that during this time of spiritual war, their children will still see the joy of the Lord and that their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs from their parents will be met. We know that Amy's brother is a believer and he really needs the strong support of other believers praying alongside him right now.

This has all weighed heavily on Amy as it is difficult thinking about moving further away while this is going on at home. Please pray for peace of mind for her and her trusting the Lord.

Thank you all for reading this and for joining us in prayer. We hope to find out about our approval to New Orleans within the next week or so and will let you know when and what we find out.

Welcome everybody

Hi Everyone in Internet land. This is Phil. We've been wanting to put something on here for a while, but just haven't had the time. Work has been really busy.

Our applications are in and references are being processed. We're really excited. I got a phone call from the director of the Crisis Response ministry that we might be working with in New Orleans, Mark Lewis. He was in the area and wanted to get together. We met up for coffee and had a chance to catch up.

It seems to me that every time I get discouraged (doubting whether we should go, wondering if we would make a difference, etc...) I get a phone call or email, or something that totally encourages me that God is in control and that He is truly leading His people... whether they want to or not!!

I left feeling really excited and encouraged. When I got in the car, Moody radio was on. Having an iPod, I rarely listen to the radio, but for some reason I had it on. Listening and thinking about some stuff we still need to do before we leave, I heard them mention something about Katrina relief in New Orleans. Of course, my ears perked.

After a few commercials, Greg Wheatly from Prime-time America introduced Pastor Michael Sprague from Trinity Church in Covington, LA!! It was really neat hearing Pastor Michael, a man that I've met and talked with and been so encouraged by in the past, talking on the radio!! Not only that, but talking about some of the very things, Mark and I had just talked about. Here's the link: go to 1:31:00. That should be about where Pastor Michael is introduced. mbn.org/ContentStore/ProgAudioArchives/2007-07-19_Prime_Time_America.asx

I have really enjoyed talking with people about the work we will be doing in New Orleans. It's surprising to them that people still need to go down there and help. It's so far removed from the headlines and overshadowed by "more important" news. Most people could tell me more about Paris Hilton's prison term than the work that still needs to be done in New Orleans (I'm ranting... sorry). Anyway... I was really excited to hear someone else say "there's still a need". And it's a big one. Please take a few minutes to look around the efca.org/katrina link on the right. There is some valuable information on their website. Also, if you are interested in supporting us in any way, please let us know.
